A one-off recording for the Colpix label in 1963, this set by "Mr. Five-By-Five" further demonstrates the man could swing and sell a ballad, all with the same conviction and style. A veteran of the Blue Devils, Benny Moten's band and the early Count Basie ensembles, he became along with Big Joe Turner, one of the top "blues shouters" in the Kansas City mode. As with most of the now-collectable Colpix/Colgems recordings of the 1960s, the sound on this Rushing set is incredible, having been transferred directly from the original 3 track masters, capturing the intimacy of his phrasing while letting the backing musicians cut through in a crystal clear accompaniment. Highlights abound in jazz chestnuts and newer tunes alike: Just Because, 'Tain't Nobody's Biz-Ness If I Do, Heartaches, I'm Walkin' Through Heaven With You, Trouble In Mind, Please Come Home, You Always Hurt The One You Love, My Bucket's Got A Hole In It and more.
