It was only natural that a collection of "live" recordings would be forthcoming from the most popular rock band of the 1970's. Released as the soundtrack to a filmed documentary of the same name, The Song Remains The Same gave Zeppelin fans something to watch and listen to in 1976 while the band finished their next studio effort, Presence, which would be released later that same year. This double-LP set is a handful of their greatest hits and concert favorites, most expanded in length from their studio counterparts with solos galore. Guitar-legend Jimmy Page's sinister playing, especially on No Quarter and Stairway To Heaven blisters and shreds! What lacks in studio perfection is made up in spades by the raw energy and emotion that this band seemed to feed off of in front of live audiences. Lead singer Robert Plant is right at home, commanding the assault with his wails and vocal gymnastics while the late John Bonham pounds thunder from his drum kit, creating a bombastic wall of rhythm. John Paul Jones, the bass player and sometime keyboardist tastefully fills in the balance. The Song Remains The Same is a fitting tribute and souvenir to what a live Led Zep show was like in the band's prime. The balance of songs are Rock And Roll, Celebration Day, The Song Remains The Same, Rain Song, Dazed And Confused, Moby Dick and Whole Lotta' Love.
