As part of Vocalion’s May 2006 British jazz releases, we present on CD for the first time two of three albums Salena Jones recorded for CBS during the late 1960s and early ’70s. American-born Salena, long-acknowledged as one of the finest jazz singers in the history of the music, moved to the UK in the mid-’60s and rapidly established herself as one of the leading lights on Britain’s jazz scene — a position she has maintained ever since. Her booking of seven consecutive weeks in 1968 at Ronnie Scott’s famous Soho jazz club and her appearance at the London jazz festival ‘Expo ’68’ helped consolidate her reputation as a singer to be ranked alongside Ella Fitzgerald, Pearl Bailey and Sarah Vaughan. Incidentally, Salena hails from the small town of Newport News on America’s East Coast, which is also the birthplace of Ella Fitzgerald and Pearl Bailey. In the late ’60s Salena signed with the CBS label. The Moment of Truth and Everybody’s Talkin’ about Salena Jones feature her stunning renditions of both standards and modern songs — taking in soul and funk as well as jazz along the way - backed by the superb arrangements of Keith Mansfield, who conducts his orchestra.
