The king of British light music, Mantovani, makes yet another appearance on Vocalion with two shining jewels from his vast Decca discography. Strauss Waltzes was an album that Mantovani seemed destined to make. As early as 1929 he had recorded Morning Papers for a small label, and in November 1940 had prepared Wine, Women and Song for a Decca 78-rpm release. In his salon orchestra days, Mantovani performed Johan n Strauss’s waltzes on numerous occasions, not to mention playing them many times in his BBC broadcasts, so he certainly knew his Strauss. This respect for and experience of Strauss’s music comes to the fore in the first album in this compilation, with Mantovani’s sublime renderings of Roses from the South, Blue Danube, Village Swallows, Wine, Women and Song, Tales from the Vienna Woods and many more. From two decades later, Mantovani Favourites is a fascinating curio. Compiled by Decca in-house producer Tony D’Amato at time when Mantovani had retired from the music business, it features recordings that were either not released or did not achieve album status, plus several tunes that had not been issued in either Britain or America when the album was envisaged. Thus we are afforded the opportunity of hearing Mantovani rarities such as Dream, Londonderry Air, The Happy Wanderer, Polonaise in A and others. Unmissable!
