Kwok Yim-cheung and Lui Chiu-wah are partners in a marriage betrothal recognised by a gold-braided fan, a keepsake bestowed by the emperor. Kwok's family fortune gradually goes on a decline. He seeks work from Chiu-wah's father Lui Kong, a minister. Lui despises Kwok and banishes him, having misconceived his trespassing on Chiu-wah's chamber. Kwok believes that this is a ploy used by the father and daughter to annul the marriage and leaves for the capital. Meanwhile, Chiu-wah is implicated in a murder and becomes exiled. At the borderland, she meets a scornful Kwok, sent to the frontier as special emissary. Luckily, Chiu-wah's cousin Lee Kwai-ying offers to clarify their misunderstanding. The lovers at last ties the marriage knot.
