Content : Hou Hsiao-Hsien's films have always, in a peculiar way, related the viewers to the crude reality of modern Taiwan. Goodbye South, Goodbye takes us into the lives of an exhausted gangster, his volatile sidekick, and their girlfriends. Terrible failures in a society where greed is really, really good, they are full of despai. Hou's examination of four damaged lives moving from one get-rich-quick scheme to another has the external grip of a noir movie and the inffable pull of poetry. Lim Giong's soundrack, with a rough and tumble Taiwan flavor, helps drenched the movie in spooly ennui.
